PCLinuxOS and SOHO/NAT Routers

One of the easiest ways to help secure your PCLinuxOS machine is to use a hardware router. Linksys∞, Netgear∞ and do-it-yourself-models∞ are all very popular options. As a bonus, NAT (network address translation∞) routers have one IP address and then share that IP address with multiple "private" IP addresses which you can give to your PCs.

This is the most common way to share your broadband Internet connection with multiple PCs, or other network devices (video game consoles, Vonage, etc).

NAT Routers

Almost any of the routers you can find at local retailers are compatible with Linux, and are an excellent way to help secure your network. Here are a few quick tips for picking up the right router.

1. If you don't need a wireless router, get one anyway, but make sure to disable the radio/wifi before using. Wireless routers are often cheaper than regular routers.

2. Make sure that the router's WAN and LAN ports are advertised as "fast ethernet" or "802.3u" compatible.

3. Most consumer grade routers have well known defualt passwords to their web administration pages. Make sure to purchase a router that you can easily change the web admin password and turn off "remote administration" features before connecting to your cable/DSL modem.

4. Look for deals online. Several retailers give away routers after you count the mail in rebate.

Once you have your new router, you will need to plug your computer into it by connecting your Ethernet card to a LAN port on the router, and follow your router's instruction manual. Most router's will automatically send your PC configuration information (DHCP).
