Target Audience
Back to Contributors
PCLinuxOS isn't a normal Linux distribution. It is a livecd (which means it runs directly from the CD and it doesn't use the harddrive), and as such it comes preconfigured by the excellent hardware detection routines. The approach we took on the Wiki was (for better or worse) presume everything is OK and we get started, and give troubleshooting help where applicable.
The target audience is:
Tom. He's been using Windows for a while on his computer. He uses his computer almost daily and like most people, he uses it to surf the web, do his email and instant messaging, download some things from the web, play music and watch some video, write some documents and occasionally install some software and experiment a little bit. He also bought a digital camera the other day and is now making pictures of everything. His favorite shot he took this afternoon is... of Harry, his dog. :)
He is however getting more and more annoyed with all the viruses and problems he experiences. A friend, Dick, heard about PCLinuxOS and recommended it to him. Tom enjoys the easy point-and-click interface from Windows and already read some negative publications about Linux. He doesn't look forward to having to buy new hardware and having to relearn all his computer skills. Not did he like the idea of having to type in strange commands. He wonders what PCLinuxOS will do to his Windows. But he does like the idea of not having to deal with spyware and virusses, and the fact that it doesn't cost him much money surely helps. He wonders if PCLinuxOS will get his camera to work, and to see if his mp3 player will work as well.
Tom's goals, he:
- wants to use his computer, not worry about virusses and spyware.
- wants to do his daily routine with as little hassle as possible.
- wants to feel at home quickly.
- He just doesn't want to feel stupid when he boots his PCLinuxOS.
- He doesn't want to have to figure out too much, or read thick books to just do his daily routine.
- He doesn't mind reading a little bit, he understands it something different, but it should be appropriate, readable and easy to understand.
- doesn't want to spend any more money, specially on an unknown factor like Linux.
- doesn't want to get out his screwdriver. He likes his PC cover closed.
- likes his point-and-click, and want to generally have fun using his PC!
- doesn't want to risk his working Windows setup.
- doesn't want to learn a whole new vocabulary just to check his email
- wants to have Harry feel at home using PCLinuxOS as well.
Tom's requirements. Tom needs to:
- know how to do his daily activities
- know how to obtain the software (OS and additional packages) he needs
- know how to maintain his computer and software
- know atleast something about the background of PCLinuxOS and how it is different
- know he isn't going to be stabbed in the back by using another OS
- be able to find information he needs quickly
- be able to understand the information he finds
- have to-the-point clear-speak, no geek-speak explanations
- have access to alternative solutions
- have a follow-up plan when he reads the wiki
- feel supported in doing his daily activities on PCLinuxOS
- feel secure in doing what he does
- progress quickly from newb level to intermediate level
- be able to stand on his own feet quickly
- feel good about the experience and have fun using PCLinuxOS

We've basically set up the Wiki in 4 sections.
Section 1: Getting and booting your copy of PCLinuxOS.
This section explains how to get and use a copy of
PCLinuxOS. It explains downloading, torrents, iso's, versions, burning CDs, etc. It also explains how to boot your PC, configure your PC for booting from CD, use boot parameters, etc.
Section 2: Doing the daily run
After some initial getting up and running we Tom wants to know how to do his daily routines. Per step - as much as seems logical - put in a trouble-shooting part, to fix what might be broken and what to do if the presumption of 'everything works' just isn't true. This basically explains the key path. The things Tom will do most.
Section 3: Installation and configuration
Tom is positive about his PCLinuxOS experience (both the OS and the community) and at some point he does want to install it. What does he need to know to do so?
Section 4: Life, the Universe and Everything
Everything we didn't discuss. This includes personalizing his computer, problems he might experience not already discussed, and the more advanced topics such as Wifi, Laptops, creating videodvds, etc.
