THIS PAGE BEING MOVED TO http://docs.mypclinuxos.com/SettingUpRouting∞
This page will explain how to share your internet with another (Windows) computer, with your PCLinuxOS computer as 'master' and 'gateway' and your Windows PC as 'slave' - the safest and best setup possible.
Now a few words about the advantage of using Linux as a gateway to the internet. Firewalls. The Linux firewall is superior to Windows firewalls. Most potential attacks on your Windows computer can be blocked by the Linux firewall. This, however, does not preclude the necessity for a firewall on your Windows computer. For the Linux firewall will still allow connections from the world wide web (port 80) and email clients (pop3, port 25). Now if there are files being transmitted through those ports, Linux won't stop them. Also, there is the problem of spyware on Windows computers. A windows firewall will keep potential programs from transmitting data FROM your windows computer to the internet.
Setting up the hardware
To get started, first get a second network card for your Linux box. You can get them very cheap (about 10 dollars) at a local used computer shop. Or you can get a new one for around 20 dollars at an office supply or electronics supply store. Install the second card into an open slot in your Linux box.
Now connect the Internet (the RJ-45∞ connection) to one of the network cards. This is where your internet gateway will be set. On the other card, connect it onto the windows computer. When your Linux computer reboots, hit the esc key to go to verbose mode and watch which card is listed as eth0 and eth1 - which is the first ethernet networking card (eth0), and which is the second. You will need to know this so that you know which card to install as the internet connection and which one to configure for sharing the internet.
Configure Internet
The first step is to configure the card which is connected to the internet. To do this, open the PCLinuxOS Control Center via Start -> Configuration -> PCLinuxOS Control Center.
Enter your root password and hit enter. Click on networking. Then click on Create a new network interface (LAN, ADSL, Wireless, etc.) When the window opens click on either ADSL or Cable connection, depending on which broadband service you use. If you choose a cable connection, you will be asked to choose an authentication method. I am not sure what bpal login means, because it is not an issue with my network. (I use charter cable, so if this is your isp, the 'none' setting will work). Even if you dont use charter, click none, and if it does not work, you can change it with the bpal setting.
Your next screen (or your first screen, if you use the (A)DSL will be to choose the network card which is connected to the internet.
In the next screen, you choose the means which your card communicates with your isp. Most broadband (if not all) use dhcp (dynamic host configuration protocol) to set your machine. This is basically a set of instructions to automatically set your card to the settings needed for your card to communicate with the server.
The next screen, you have the option to set your computer naming settings. Check the default settings, leave the DHCP hostname blank. If the Linux box is a laptop, check track network card id. If you are not using a laptop, keep it unchecked. And make sure Network hotplugging is set.
On the next screen, you enter a name for your computer. It needs to be a qualified host name in the "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" format. Don't use a domain name of an existing web service. If in doubt, just use the 'mybox.mylab.myco.com' suggestion in the window. the next screen allows you to setup a zeroconf screen. Leave it blank.
On the next screen, you are given the option of allowing users to start (and stop) the connection. If you click 'yes' you will be able to start the connection without having to enter the root password to start the connection. On the next screen you have the option to start the connection at boot. I suggest you click on the 'yes' radio button. On the next screen, you are advised to restart the x environment to avoid any hostname related problems. So at this time, logout of your x environment, press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, and log back on. Your internet connection should be now working. Open a browser and confirm that you are able to connect to the internet.
Setting up the second networking card
Now you want to setup the network card connected to your Windows machine. Reopen PCLinuxOS Control Center and click on networking. Click on 'Share the Internet Connection With Other Local Machines'. When the Internet Connection Sharing window opens, you are prompted to make sure that you have configured the Linux box for an internet connection. This step was taken in the previous step.
In the next screen, you select the card which is connected to the Internet. Open the drop-down box and click on the card connected to the internet. On the next screen, you now choose the card which is connected to your Windows box. There will only be one choice (since you only have two cards, and one is already selected for connection to the internet).
On the next screen, you set the LAN Network settings. The default settings are fine. Of note on this screen it is the internal domain name. This is the domain name server that your web browser needs to translate website URLs to IP addresses. On the next screen, you set the Domain name server configuration. Keep the default settings.
On the next screen, you configure the DHCP server settings. make sure the 'Use automatic configuration checkbox is checked.
The next screen you set the proxy caching server. In a nutshell, a proxy server is a means by which internet network services can be shared with other machines across the local network. This makes Windows able to see the internet through your PCLinuxOS computer. Make sure the 'Use this gateway as a proxy caching server'.
On the next screen, if you have a printer connected to the Linux machine, you have the option to broadcast the printer info. Even if you don't have a printer, but may connect one in the future, click the 'yes' radio button. Otherwise, click 'no'.
If you have shorewall (the PCLinuxOS firewall) installed on your Linux computer you will be warned that an existing firewall is present and the settings are about to be changed. Go ahead and click 'OK'. you should be fine. Now the Linux box will download needed files (if any) and configure your internet connection settings. Now your Linux box should be able to share you internet connection with your windows box and use the PCLinuxOS firewall to protect your Windows PC!
Setting up the Windows PC
There may be some need to change the settings on your Windows box. I use Windows 98 and the method of setting your Windows box might be different. Here is what I do in win98. Find the XP equivalents.
Click on Start -> Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click on the 'internet options' icon. Click on the connections tab. Click on the 'setup' button. This opens the internet connection wizard.
In the Internet Connection wizard, click on the radio button which reads 'I want to setup my internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a Local Area Network (LAN). On the next screen, click on the 'I connect through a local area network (LAN)'. On the next screen, click on the 'automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended)' radio button.
The next screen asks you if you want to setup and internet mail account. Whether or not this is important is up to you. On the last screen, click on the 'To connect to the Internet immediately, select this box, then click Finish'. Now Windows Explorer will open and goto msn.com. If it opens without problems your setup is finished!
