Pim Application
Kontact is a personal information organizer, it allows you to manage yor email, datebook, memos, news feeds, rss feeds, and handheld organizer all from one simple interface. Kontact doesn't do all these things by itself, instead it is just a convient front end to all the other applications that do all the real work.
This sort of setup is quite common in the linux world. Where there are smaller single function applications that do what they do very well, these smaller applications are then gathered together under a common interface. K3b is another excellent example of this type of integration.
Kontact Initial Startup
The first time that Kontact is started it will ask for some basic user information so that it will meet your needs. All of the basic components can be configured from this screen or if you don't know what needs to go in a certain field you can wait and fill them out later. The configuration screen can be reached from the Settings menu in Kontact. You also have a chance to view the Kontact manual or visit the Kontact website from the first screent that Kontact shows. The manual is a good thing to browse through as the features that Kontact offers will be only touched upon lightly in this short introduction. This is a very powerful information management system, very feature rich while being simple to use.
Summary Screen
The Summary screen, shown in the shot to the left is where you can check on all of your information with a single glance. From unread mail to pending appointments, birthdays, breaking news or a reminder that you need to pick up a half gallon of milk today. A click on any of the sections will take you to that pending information. Click on the image for more information on the Summary Screen.
Mail
The mail portion of Kontact is a front end to Kmail. With this application you can set up and manage multiple email accounts, and going through Kontact you also have tight integration with the other pim applications. For more information on Kontact Kmail click on the image to the right.
Contacts
The Contacts section of Kontact uses
KAddressBook to manage all of the people in your contacts list. You can manage all of their personal and buisiness information with it so you are never in the dark when that person calls and you just can't seem to remember who they are.
Kontact Calendar
Kontact uses KOrganizer for its calendar. This is an easy to use application that allows you to keep track of all of your appoints and important dates.
To-do List
The Kontact
ToDo list a straight forward todo list. You add items to it and select whether you want a reminder etc. The items in the todo list will show up in the summary screen of Kontact so that you can integrate the items in with any other scheduled items that you may have.
Journal
Many people keep a daily journal. Here it is integrated with the other components of Kontact so that making entries and tracking and finding them only takes a few clicks.

Notes
The notes application is a quick way to jot down anything you would like to keep track of. Notes is also capable of syncing with the memo application in Palm OS powered devices . Once any memos are synced you can edit them at the pc through notes by clicking on the note title or it is simple to copy and paste the text into another application once the edit window is open. In fact most of this introduction to Kontact was written in the memo pad application of my Sony CLIE. Then synced to notes and pasted into the wiki page.

Feeds
With Kontact, through
Akregator it is simple to track your favorite weblogs or any other site that provides an RSS feed. In fact you can receive updated versions of this web page if you like. In your web browser navigate to the page that you want to get a feed from. Once there find the RSS link for the page right click on the link and choose Copy Link location from the menu. Now back in Kontact click on the Feeds icon on the left side of the window, this will open the interface to Akregaor. Right click on the heading titled All Feeds. From the menu that pops up select Add Feed. Right click in the text feed titled url and choose paste from the menu. Hit OK and the link will be added to the list of feeds. You can adjust things like how often the feed should be checked for updated content and whether or not to save the article after you have read them.
