I have installed PCLinuxOS in October 2006, to test its suitablility for remastering onto hire PCs.
Other distros that I have evaluated for this purpose are:
- Ubuntu: my main distro. I have used it since early 2005. Before that, since 1997 I used Redhat.
- Knoppix: actually I mainly used this to learn about using a live CD, but I have not really considered using it for remastering.
- Puppy: Uses the excellent union filesystem approach, so a remaster is essentially held in a single file that is a container for a read-only layer of the filesystem. User changes can be held in the read-write layer, and it is all contained in one other file system. This had the potential to be by far the most easily manageable system. However I do not like its home-built package management system: it is too simplistic and so does not cater for dependencies properly.
- PCLinuxOS: I am setting up a master and creating it as per RemasterLiveCD.
