Setting Up Programs to use the KPrinter Dialogue

Back to Setting up your printer

THIS PAGE BEING MOVED TO http://docs.mypclinuxos.com/ConfigAppsPrint

First a word of warning: If you wish to use a partial print selection, say, even pages only, only select it on the original dialogue. For example, if you select this from a 10-page doc, your program will send pages 2,4,6,8 and 10 to kprinter. If you then select "evens" from kprinter as well, you'll only get pages 4 and 8. I'm sure you can work out why!

Firefox

The latest version seems to have the printers defined listed correctly unlike earlier versions. The next two paragraphs may only apply if you have not made updates to the latest version.

The setup is easy, but I could not get it to print either directly or via kprinter on my setup. The latest updates seemed to fix this problem. So always make sure your software is up to date via Synaptic!

Click on the menus: File > Print. In the print dialogue box, click on the "Properties" button, and "cut" the contents of the Print Command box. You may wish to paste it into a text file in case you want to put it back later. Now type into the Print Command box: kprinter --stdin. Then click OK. Now whenever you click on "Print" in the main dialogue box, you will fetch up the kprinter dialogue.

When it comes to printing, however, you may find Konqueror better. If you wish to (optionally) print the background as seen on the screen, Konq can do it, FF cannot.

The Gimp

This setup is none too hard. Run Gimp, and either open a picture, or select File > New from the menus. On the picture's menu, click File > Print. Near the top right of the dialogue box, click "New Printer". Select "Custom Command" and type in kprinter --stdin. Click OK. Now at the bottom of the print dialogue box, click Save Settings. If you don't, you work is lost!

Scribus

Scribus looks like a KDE program but is in fact a Qt program, so uses the same "styles". It does not use the basic Kprinter dialogue box. However, its print dialog is excellent. You can select "Alternative Printer Command" which remembers its previous setting, so set it to "kprinter" (no need for the "--stdin" bit). Or you can use the Scribus printer, click on Properties and select all the settings your printer can handle, which is great for Desktop Publishing. Best of both worlds.

Other Programs

From the above I hope you get the general idea. If you can work out how to add the kprinter dialogue to another non-KDE program, please feel free to add it.
