Mozilla Thunderbird security update 2.0.0.23

The Mozilla Thunderbird email client has been udated to 2.0.0.23. This is a security update to close a reported a mismatch in the treatment of domain names in SSL certificates between SSL clients and the Certificate Authorities (CA) which issue server certificates.

This update will be part of your normal updates from the  Synaptic Software Manager. More information about this security update can be found on the Mozilla website.

Noteworthy PCLinuxOS updates (Aug 16th – Aug 22nd 2009)

Another exciting week has past already! Can you believe it? Well here’s the latest updates to the PCLinuxOS repository over the past week.

The Enlightenment  (E-17) desktop packages got a full update this week bringing in the latest snapshot from the E-17 developers. If you are wanting a nice eye candy desktop without the bloat then install task-enlightenment from the Synaptic Software Manager.  Log out to the KDE or GDM log in manager, click on session, change to E17 then log in as usual.

Notable New Packages this week include:

gadmin- A suite of administrator tools written in GTK2 were imported into the repository including gadmin-dhcpd, gadmin-squid, gadmin-sendmail, gadmin-samba, gadmin-rsync, gadmin-proftpd, gadmin-httpd and gadmin-bind.

Bluemindo – a really simple but powerful audio player in Python/PyGTK, using Gstreamer. It can downloads albums or artists pictures and lyrics as doing desktop notifications or sending music to your Last.fm profile or on your Jabber account (via PEP).

Chromium-browser – the new browser from Google.  Chromium replaces the google-chrome package  as we now have a native port to PCLinuxOS instead of a transplanted deb package.

Gevice – a tool for the administration of  a network device.  It is designed for being used in the GNOME Desktop.

Jpcap – a Java library for capturing and sending network packets from Java applications.

Monosim – a simple application that can be used to read, write, update, delete and backup your sim card contacts.

OpenCPN – a concise ChartPlotter/Navigator program.

Osmo – a handy personal organizer which includes calendar, tasks manager and address book modules.

Stuffkeeper – a generic catalog program.

TeamSpeak – as flexible, powerful, scalable software which enables people to speak with one another over the Internet.

Ihatethecashew – get rid of the cashew on your KDE 4 desktop

plasma-desktop-themes – added 9 plasma desktop themes for the KDE 4 desktop

In testing this week:

MadWifi – updated driver from svn for the Atheros Wireless devices.

Kernel- 2.6.27.31 – Updated to 2.6.27.31 kernel with many updates such as lirc support, hdpvr support, ndiswrapper, eeepc-laptop support, and much much more.

Scribus- 1.3.5.1 – a DTP (Desktop Publishing) application in the tradition of Xpress, Pagemaker or similar.

X11 driver updates – including nv, ati and openchrome xorg drivers.

Notable package updates this week include:

GIMP – updated to 2.6.7  – an image manipulation program suitable for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

HardInfo – updated to 0.5.1  – a system profiler for Linux systems. It can display information about the hardware and software.

Impro-Visor – updated to 4.06 – a music notation  program designed to help jazz musicians compose.

Midori – updated to 0.1.9 – a lightweight GTK+ 2 web browser based on WebKitGtk

Pidgin – updated to 2.6.1 -  allows you to talk to anyone using a variety of messaging protocols, including AIM (Oscar and TOC), ICQ, IRC, Yahoo!,

Pinky-Tagger – updated to 2.3.3 -  a mass tagger for Linux written in C++ using the Qt4 widget set.

Wine doors – updated to 0.1.3  is an application designed to assist users in obtaining, installing, uninstalling and working around the caveats associated with wine applications.

Noteworthy PCLinuxOS updates (Aug 9st – Aug 15th 2009)

There were a lot of updates to the PCLinuxOS repository last week.  Here is a list of interesting updates and new packages.

We continue to fill out the KDE 4 repository by adding/updating the following KDE 4 ports. DoAsRoot – Service menu,  Kdenlive – Video editor,  Krename – File rename, Choqok – micro blogging client, Kding – Dictionary application, Konversation – Irc client, Krusader – File manager, Rekonq -  a webkit based Web broswer and Quassel – Irc client. Those who have converted from KDE 3 and testing KDE 4 generally have had  a positive experience. The debate however continues as to why such a radical change in the way the new desktop operates as opposed to the previous 3.x version.

Packages new to the repository include:

  • Bnes – A very accurate SNES Emulator.
  • Kupfer – An application launcher for Gnome
  • MoneyManagerEx – A easy to use personal finance manager
  • Nfoview -  A simple viewer for NFO files
  • Transmission-QT – The QT port of the popular bitorrent client.
  • TVMosaic – Mosaic Viewer of TV channels from a DVB tuner.
  • VNStatGui – A frontend to monitor traffic on your network connection.

Notable package updates this week include:

  • DivFix++ -  a program to fix broken AVI streams updated.
  • Bleachblit – a program to reclaim disk space updated to fix a missing menu entry
  • Glest – a 3D real time strategy game updated to version 3.2.2
  • Gmpc – a GTK2 frontend to mpd updated
  • Gnome Commander – a file manager similar to Norton Commander updated to 1.2.8.1
  • Gphotoframe – a gnome photo gadget updated
  • InvulgoTracker – Time tracker for your projects and tasks updated
  • Kernel  – a security issue update to close local exploit in net.c code reported last week
  • Lifeograph – a diary to take personal notes on life updated to 0.5.3
  • Listen – a musical manager for Gnome updated to fix a missing dependency
  • MhWaveEdit – a graphical program for editing sound files updated to 1.4.16
  • Mscore – a music composition and notation application updated .
  • Mypaint – a simple paint program updated to 0,7,1
  • Filezilla – a fast FTP client updated to latest version
  • Gimp – a great paint program updated to 2.6.7
  • Nted – a musical score program updated
  • Pdfedit – an editor for manupulating PDF documents updated to 0.4.3
  • Redbook – a personal diary updated to 0.8.4
  • Seamonkey – a full internet suite updated to latest version
  • Viewnior – a simple image viewing program updated
  • Youtubedl – updated to fix a dl problem

In testing this week:

  • Hplip – updated to fix a parallel print build option
  • Nvidia – driver updated to 185.18.31
  • Samba – updated to version 3.3.7

Noteworthy PCLinuxOS updates (Aug 1st – Aug 8th 2009)

There were a lot of updates to the PCLinuxOS repository last week.  Here is a list of interesting updates and new packages.

  • MythTV packages were updated. MythTV is a personal video recorder (PVR) application
  • All of the LXDE desktop core components were updated to their latest versions
  • Google Chrome brower for Linux was added for users to play with even though it is not recommended at this time for general consumer use. This version has plug-in and theme support. All I can say is boy this thing is fast and fairly stable considering it hasn’t reached beta quality.
  • Our favorite virtualization software package Virtualbox OSE was updated to version 3.0.4. This package allows you to run an entire OS such as Windows XP or another Linux distribution in virtualization mode on your desktop. This is a great way to test Linux distributions first before committing one to your hard drive.
  • The mighty Firefox web browser was updated to version 3.5.2 which brought in some security and stability updates.
  • KDE 4.3.0 packages were completed and many users are converting over from KDE 3 to KDE 4 and testing out the new desktop from kde.org
  • Wine the Windows emulator was updated to 1.1.27. Wine allows users to run various Windows program right on their Linux system.
  • Two games got updated Globulation and Hedwars. Both are fun to play.

Packages new to the repository include:

  • Eatfeed – A news feed reader
  • Gejengel – A music player
  • IfreeBudget – A java based budgeting and finance program
  • Roxbox – a cool alternative frontend for various mp3 players
  • Tuxcall – caller id software for modems that support it
  • Freerapid – a java based downloading program for rapidshare and other file sharing archives
  • Goobox – a CD player and ripper application
  • InvulgoTracker – Time tracker for your tasks & projects

In testing this week:

  • Bash – updated to 4.0
  • Samba – upated to 3.3.6 Samba allows Linux and Windows to share files and folders over a network.
  • Kernel – Kernel 2.6.27.29 was added
  • Hplip – hplip software for HP printers was updated to 3.9.8
